Short answer: in Greater Vancouver, an independent marketing consultant generally charges between CA$75 and CA$125 per hour early-career, CA$150 to CA$350 per hour at senior level, and an outsourced marketing direction (fractional CMO) runs between CA$6,000 and CA$13,700 per month on the market, with small-business formulas starting around CA$3,800. Long answer: the right number depends on the billing model, the level of expertise and, above all, what you are actually buying. That is what we break down here, with figures.

The three billing models (and a fourth on the rise)

Before comparing rates, compare models. Two quotes that look very different can come out to the same price once you translate them into deliverables.

ModelTypical range (CAD)Best forWatch out for
Hourly$75 to $350/h depending on seniorityOne-off advice, coaching, troubleshootingWithout a clear scope, the bill is unpredictable
Per project$600 to $5,000+ depending on scale (audit, strategy, implementation)Defined deliverable, fixed budgetCheck what is included (revisions, follow-up)
Monthly retainer$1,000 to $20,000/month depending on volumeContinuous management (ads, content, CRM)Require a monthly report and visible hours
Fractional CMO$6,000 to $13,700/month; SMB formulas from ~$3,800Marketing leadership without an executive hireClarify strategy alone vs strategy + execution

The fractional CMO deserves its own line because the market has exploded. According to Go Fractional's 2026 guide, most North American companies pay between US$5,000 and US$20,000 per month for this role, with an average around US$10,000 to US$12,000 for two to three days per week. Lighter small-business formulas, around twenty hours per month, bring this model down to an accessible budget.

Why are the gaps so wide?

Because "marketing consultant" covers very different realities. On international platforms like Upwork, the median sits around US$35 per hour: you mostly find one-off execution there (a page, a campaign, a visual), rarely someone who takes responsibility for your strategy. At the other end, a senior profile who has managed budgets and teams charges CA$150 to CA$350 per hour, and technical specialties (CRM, paid advertising, measurement) trade between CA$200 and CA$300 per hour in Canada.

In practice, five factors explain most of the gap on a quote:

  1. Seniority. Ten years of experience are not worth ten times more, but a senior arrives with shortcuts: fewer hours for the same result, fewer costly mistakes.
  2. Technical specialization. CRM, Google Ads, analytics and automation bill higher than writing or coordination, because mistakes cost more there too.
  3. Strategy or execution. Designing the plan and pushing the buttons are two different jobs. The vaguest quotes are the ones that never say which of the two you are buying.
  4. Commitment over time. A three-month-plus retainer typically trades 10 to 15% below the à la carte rate: predictability has value on both sides.
  5. Urgency. Crisis communications or a launch in two weeks bill at a premium. Planning ahead is saving.

Consultant or hire: the math few small businesses do

The true comparable for an ongoing consultant is not another consultant: it is a hire. In Vancouver, the average salary of a marketing manager sits around CA$76,000 per year according to PayScale (2025), and considerably more in larger organizations. Adding payroll costs and benefits (15 to 20%), you are looking at roughly $7,500 per month for a full-time role, before tools, training and the risk of a bad hire.

A Greater Vancouver small business that needs marketing leadership 15 to 20 hours per month does not need that full-time role. That is exactly the niche of the senior consultant or the light fractional CMO formula: executive-level expertise, prorated to the hours that are actually useful. Hiring becomes the right choice again when the volume of execution justifies a full position, often beyond 60 to 80 hours of marketing work per month.

How to budget: three realistic small-business scenarios

Scenario 1: maintain ($500 to $1,500/month). You already have a healthy base and want to keep it alive: regular content, small optimizations, tracking the numbers. A light retainer of about 10 hours per month is enough.

Scenario 2: accelerate ($2,500 to $4,500/month). You are launching ads, reworking your acquisition or implementing a CRM. Plan for 15 to 25 hours per month, plus your media budget, which is paid separately to the platforms. To arbitrate that media budget, my Google Ads vs Meta Ads comparison gives concrete benchmarks.

Scenario 3: delegate the direction ($3,800 to $7,000/month). You want someone who designs the plan, arbitrates priorities and reports every week. That is the light fractional CMO formula, at a fraction of the cost of a full-time executive.

In all three cases, the same reading rule applies: pay for named deliverables and measurable results, never for vague hours. A good quote lists what you receive, when, and how success will be measured. That is also why I publish my services and pricing models openly: you should be able to compare before the first call.

Frequently asked questions

What is the hourly rate of a marketing consultant in Canada?

In Canada, an independent marketing consultant generally charges between CA$75 and CA$125 per hour early in their career, and between CA$150 and CA$350 per hour at senior level. Technical specialties such as CRM or paid advertising sit closer to CA$200 to CA$300 per hour. International platforms show lower medians (around US$35 per hour on Upwork), but that is mostly one-off execution, rarely strategy.

How much does a fractional CMO cost?

In North America, a fractional CMO most often charges between US$5,000 and US$20,000 per month, with an average around US$10,000 to US$12,000 according to Go Fractional's 2026 guide. On the Canadian market, observed ranges run from roughly CA$6,000 to CA$13,700 per month. Lighter small-business formulas, around 15 to 20 hours per month, exist from about CA$3,800 per month.

Hourly, project or monthly retainer: which model should I choose?

Choose hourly for a one-off need or advice, a project for a defined deliverable (audit, strategy, CRM implementation) with a fixed price, and a monthly retainer for continuous work such as ad management or an outsourced marketing direction. The right question is not "what is the lowest rate?" but "what deliverable do I get, for what amount, in how much time?".
